Getting Patina working.
Setting up a game, fixing the things that most often go wrong, and taking it all back off again.
Setting up a game
Patina looks through Steam, the EA App and your Applications folder and lists what it finds. Pick a game and choose Set Up. It backs up what was there before it changes anything, and it won't go ahead if the backup fails.
If setup asks for permission
macOS asks before one app may change another. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → App Management and switch Patina on, then try again.
Opening the overlay
Start the game, then press Home to bring Patina up on top of it.
Most Mac keyboards don't have a Home key. On a laptop it's fn + ←.
When a game isn't listed
Patina only works with games that draw using Metal, which is Apple's graphics system. If a game is shown as one it can't change, that's usually why — older titles often draw with OpenGL instead, and games running through a compatibility layer like Whisky or CrossOver aren't reachable either.
If a game you own isn't in the list at all, add it from the toolbar and point Patina at it. It'll tell you plainly whether it can work with it before you commit to anything.
When nothing changes
The game launches, but it looks exactly as it did. In order, the things worth checking:
The overlay opens. If Home does nothing, Patina isn't loaded and the rest won't help.
You have shaders. A fresh install has none — download a pack, or add .fx files you already have.
An effect is actually switched on in the overlay, and its sliders aren't at zero.
The game updated. An update replaces the file Patina changed, so set the game up again.
Removing Patina
Turning a single game off puts that game back exactly as it was — same files, same settings — and leaves everything else alone. You can do it per game, at any time.
Remove Patina goes further: it restores every game it set up, then deletes the shaders, presets and backups it created, and tells you when it's safe to drag the app to the Trash.
If a game can't be put back
Sometimes a game has moved, or it's mid-update. Patina names the ones it couldn't restore and deletes nothing, rather than removing half of it and leaving you to work out which half. Fix the game, or move it back, and run it again.

- Not recommended — Patina changes how a game draws, which anti-cheat systems are built to notice.
Still stuck?
Send us what happened and which game you were setting up. Patina can copy the details it knows about a game for you — it's in the menu next to it in the list.
